Martin’s large wall hangings each represent a lunar month, with symbolic allusions to place, time and emotion. Art is thus integrated directly to life in its physical, day-to-day setting. Paraphrasing Merleau-Ponty, the artist affirms: « The world is not what I think, but what I live. »
« My work is concerned with the passage of time. My millennium journal documents my view of daily life from November 1998 to February 2001. This view is not necessarily what I see around me; it is rather, an attempt to communicate the vision of my mind and body. Every day is as important as the next, to be experienced fully. »
