Michel Galipeau

Dance of the Blue People

Residency and exhibition

Residency : from January 13 to February 1, 2003
Opening : Saturday February 1, at 5pm

Intensity of emotions flowing through the essence of colour. Galipeau explores the power of music and its influence on us in this series of brightly-coloured, textured paintings, inspired by the energy and passion of the music of Latin America.

« Galipeau has been choreographing these Dancing Blue People for a few years. The first figure did a salsa with him at the Northern Lights Festival Boreal during the performance of Casava, a Latin musical group performing that summer. […] Like the music, Galipeau’s work framed moments in time using basic shapes and simple subject matter. The dances depict the natural movements of passion together or alone. ‘The is red – passion, yellow – soul, black – expression, blue – intuition. The essence within,’ explains Galipeau. The Dancing Blue People reflects more than how he reacted to the music. They are inviting by their simplicity of detail and the bold contrast of colours between the figures and the background. They became alive, moving, emotional, expressive and passionate. Then they become more than the music. They become the dance. »
