Fibre, fabric, color and the human form

These three artists bring together on a conceptual level, fibre, fabric, color and the human form. The body’s natural transformations are feared and unacceptable. Three well known artists from Sudbury present the exhibition 1,3,5 which examines the need to constantly interfere and camouflage the natural process of aging.

Three dimensional works conceived in a variety of mediums – paper mâché, painting on silk, and assemblage of organic materials – are presented.

«Semi-collaborative in nature, the work shares similar themes but very different appearances. Blended together, these sprawling, organic pieces give the small exhibition space an invigorating, overgrown quality. Entering it is like entering a jungle shrine long abandoned and unruly.

Topp’s two highly involved, superbly crated pieces – The Quintuplets and All Souls and Self – are devastatingly freakish and challenging. They teeter on a narrow edge of psychosis: one puff of breath could push them over the edge. They are clearly breakthrough works for this dedicated, and (by the looks of these works) tormented, artist. All Souls and Self is the kind of work that could make Topp a national figure. Uncompromisingly dark and gruesome (and quite unCanadian in its harshness) it portrays a savage still-birth that is troubling and uncomfortable to look at. And equally troubling to write about.»
